How Zip Pet Grooming Protects & Cleans Your Pet’s Ears

As pet parents, we all want our furry companions to look and smell their best after a professional groom. But a truly excellent grooming experience goes way beyond a soft coat and a cute haircut—it’s also about health, safety, and total peace of mind.
One of the most sensitive areas on a dog or cat is their ears. Because of the unique shape of a pet’s ear canal, preventing water from getting trapped inside and managing ear hygiene are crucial to avoiding discomfort and ear infections.
At Zip Pet Grooming, we pride ourselves on our strict one-on-one, cage-free, and low-stress environment. Because we never rush our process, we can dedicate the time needed to handle delicate tasks—like ear care—safely and gently.
Here is a look behind the scenes at how we protect and clean your pet’s ears during their visit to our West Vancouver salon.
1. Before the Bath: The Waterproof Barrier
The best way to handle water in the ears is to make sure it never gets there in the first place! A common myth is that applying a liquid ear cleaner before the bath will block water. However, because ear cleaner is a liquid, it can't act as a barrier.
Instead, we use a simple, highly effective physical barrier: dry cotton balls.
Before your pet goes into the tub, a custom-sized, dry cotton ball is gently placed just inside the opening of each ear canal. The cotton acts exactly like a tiny sponge, catching stray water droplets from the spray nozzle before they can slide deep down into the inner ear. For pets that are highly sensitive to cotton, we can also use a specialized fabric grooming hoodie (a "Happy Hoodie") to hold the ears flat and protected against the head during the wash.
2. During the Bath: Mindful Washing
Even with cotton balls in place, our groomers practice precision washing. Water is never sprayed directly at a pet’s face or ears. Instead, the body is washed carefully with a low-pressure nozzle, and the head and face are gently cleaned using a damp cloth or a precise, controlled stream of water, tilted away from the ear openings.
3. After the Bath: The Precision Clean
Once the bath is finished and your pet is dried, the real ear care begins! This is when professional-grade, liquid ear cleaners come into play. We only use premium, trusted formulas in our salon to ensure the safest results.
Here is how our post-bath ear cleaning process works:
Evaporating Residual Moisture: The cotton balls are removed, and a few drops of a professional, non-oily ear cleaner are applied. These veterinary-prepared solutions are specifically designed to help break down any hidden moisture that may have sneaked past during the bath.
Dissolving Wax & Debris: The liquid gently dissolves unsightly and odorous ear wax build-up.
The Gentle Massage: Our groomers gently massage the base of the pet's ear. You’ll often hear a squishing sound—this means the solution is doing its job deep in the canal, breaking up debris.
The Shake and Wipe: Pets are naturally allowed to shake their heads, which helps bring the loosened wax and fluid to the surface. Finally, we use a clean cotton ball or soft tissue to gently wipe away the dissolved wax and excess liquid.
Specialized Care for Every Breed
Because we specialize in advanced styling—including Japanese master styling, Korean-style grooming, and traditional hand stripping—we know that different breeds have different ear needs. For certain wire-coated or heavy-coated breeds, ear care may also involve very gentle hair removal from the canal to ensure maximum airflow, keeping the ear canal completely dry and healthy.
The Zip Pet Grooming Difference
We believe that grooming shouldn’t be stressful. By taking our time, using top-tier professional products, and ensuring ears are completely clean and dry, we make sure your pet goes home not just looking beautiful, but feeling healthy and comfortable from head to paw!
